Ray, is it really that important to chase titles that you’d diminish the five years that basically put you on the NBA map? Come on, man, what are you thinking? So what if you go to Miami and win three more rings – you’ll have a boatload of them to be sure, but you’re basically taking the first one and flushing it down the toilet. You’re a smart guy, and you’ll say all the right things – hell, you’ll probably even take out a full-page ad thanking Celtics fans for their support. You’ll then go with the cliches, stating the NBA is a business, hoping that fans will understand that aspect of your decision. When that doesn’t work you’ll then try to take the high road, or you may start slinging mud, talking about how mean ‘ol Danny Ainge tried to trade you away not once but twice. Or you might just seize on how great the Miami organization is, how great the opportunity is to go out and win championships (because all athletes want to go out and win titles), or how you’re an f-ing free agent, and free agents are free to do whatever the hell they please, so just get over it.
I’m anxious to see how the whole media thing plays out. Can’t wait to see how ridiculous your mom looks, all blinged out in a glittery Heat jersey, how silly you look coming off the bench as the fourth wheel for the Miami Heat. Bottom line, you still ride the pine. You just get to coast a little more and let the other young superstars win titles for you. That’s taking the easy way out, IMHO. Jesus, Shuttlesworth. Really? Really?
Time will heal all wounds and we’ll all move on, but this one stings. You’ll always be a member of the family, but now you’re the weird cousin that everyone avoids like the plague.
Enjoy your run in Miami.
Hope it was worth it.
