There’s a famous fake orgasm scene in the movie ‘When Harry Met Sally’, starring Billy Crystal and Meg Ryan. Remember? They’re sitting together in the deli, arguing about a man’s ability to recognize when a woman is faking an orgasm. Sally (Meg Ryan) claims that men cannot tell the difference, and to prove her point, she loudly fakes one as other diners watch. The scene ends with Sally casually returning to her meal as an older lady at a nearby table drops the best line of the movie, possibly of all-time: “I’ll have what she’s having.”
Now, let’s talk Orlando Summer League basketball, specifically Kris Joseph. The second round pick from Syracuse turned in another nice game, scoring 12 points, grabbing seven rebounds, handing out two assists and coming up with three steals in 28:44 of action. And call me crazy, but I don’t think my man KJ is faking it. I think he’s the real deal, and that if he keeps this up, Danny Ainge is going to have a very hard time not finding a spot for him on this team. The man has an NBA body, and he has the size and strength needed to play the small forward position in the NBA. Does he have the range to play the wing? I don’t know about that – shooting range and consistency are questions that need answered at the NBA level – but it’s clear that Joseph could slide to the 2 on occasion.
Irrational exuberance on my part? I’m trying not to get too far ahead of the game here – it’s only summer league competition – but I’m getting a strong vibe that Joseph’s talents translate well to the pro game. Bottom line, he isn’t playing like a second round pick at the moment – he’s playing like he belongs. And that’s good news for the Celtics, who may have unearthed a gem with the 51st overall pick in the draft.
Can’t wait to see what else Joseph does the rest of the way out. He’s clearly getting more and more comfortable as he goes along, and at the moment he’s doing all of the right things to catch (and keep) a coach’s attention.
And while Joseph is still considered a long shot, I prefer to think of him as the real deal.
