Despite the naysayers who harped on Jared Sullinger’s back issue and predicted something akin to the collapse of the Mayan civilization, the rookie from Ohio State is going to help the Celtics in a big way, and trust me, he’s going to help immediately. Why? Because Sullinger is a wise guy, as in smart as hell. He knows how to play the game of basketball, and that goes a long way in this league. So what if he’s not the biggest at his position. A little on the slow side? Big deal. Sullinger has the brain power to do some terrific things on the basketball court, and he’s going to have plenty of opportunities to make the teams that passed on him pay for their indiscretions.
Give Sullinger credit for being a cerebral player. Just don’t turn that into a negative, as if that’s all the man has in his arsenal. He has the wingspan of a Boeing 747 and a backside that would make Kim Kardashian blush.
Will Sullinger win the coveted Rookie of the Year Award? Probably not. Will he be one of the most valuable role players on this year’s Celtics team? Most definitely. Call me crazy if you will, but I see Sullinger playing a major role with this team as the season progresses. And if it takes a village to raise a child – even a child wise beyond his years – then Boston is the place for Sullinger to be. Doc trusts him. I have a feeling that KG will embrace him. Rondo will feed him. Pierce will school him. On and on it will go, until Sullinger is playing important minutes and making the Celtics a better team in the process.
