The stars in the NBA universe have yet to align, but fans from Bangkok to Belgrade have long lusted for a LeBron/Kobe match-up in the NBA Finals. Television executives crave it. David Stern has had wet dreams over it – and at his age, I’m talking the kind of wet dream that requires a pair of Depends. And now, with all of that’s happened over the summer, it just might come to fruition and the world is prepped to rejoice. Everyone, it seems, wants LBJ versus Kobe, South Beach versus Hollywood. Glitz versus glam. Style squared. Let’s face facts – we haven’t seen this much excited over an anticipated match-up since the Bird/Magic in ’84.
But maybe we need to pump the brakes on Heat/Lakers for just a sec. Two teams in particular – the OKC Thunder and our very own Boston Celtics – have designs on reaching the Finals in their respective conferences, and in the process spoiling that dream match-up for yet another season.
Conspiracy theorists aren’t buying that notion, not for a minute. The Heat and Lakers are loaded, and they also have Stern and the NBA’s refs in their hip pockets. Hard to beat city hall, right? And with so much money at stake, the fix has to be in from the start – phoned in straight from the league office. Yeah, Stern would take exception to these statements, but that’s the beauty of Celtic Nation – I can write what’s on my mind, and I can write what everyone else thinks. Just ask Jim Rome what he thinks about David Stern. He’ll tell you. I’m in the same camp. Stern hated Red Auerbach, and as Rome can attest, Stern is the kind of guy who can hold a grudge.
But you know what? Ain’t gonna matter. Something tells me that this Celtics team is going to be special. Jason Terry feels that way, too, and he made his bold prediction soon after signing and backed it up by putting that outrageous tattoo on his arm. Clearly, he thinks the Celtics are good enough to get the job done. He might end up eating his words and looking like NY Jets head coach Rex Ryan, but for now I’m in Terry’s corner. Yeah, I’ve got your back, JET. The Heat are in for trouble, because we’ve got a Def Squad in Pierce, Garnett and Rondo, and Ainge has stepped up and made the right moves to augment the talented core with players like Jeff Green, Jared Sullinger and yours truly.
So chill out, every one of you who keeps predicting the long-awaited dream match-up between LeBron and the Black Mamba. Just cut that noise, yo. Ain’t happening, as far as I’m concerned.
Our Celtics are going to crash the party make some noise of there own.
