Labor Day stands somewhere in the rear view mirror, football is in the air, and our main man Rajon Rondo recently took his talents to Fashion Week in New York City. There’s a lot of pent up demand for Boston Celtics news, and the natives are getting restless. That’s a good thing. We want our basketball served up fresh, and nothing will beat training camp when it comes to the latest storylines on our favorite team.
And that’s exactly where my head’s at at this point – let’s get this party started. I want to see Rajon Rondo running the offense, not running errands as an intern for GQ. I want to get a first-hand look at Paul Pierce and see if he looks healthy and sharp. I want to see the sweat dripping off KG’s bald head. I want to see the rookies mixing it up with the veterans. I want to see the new guys – Jason Terry and Courtney Lee in particular – running plays in a Celtics practice uniform.
There are sure to be storylines galore once training camp opens up. For me, how the Celtics hold up on the injury-front is something I plan to keep an eye on. If we can keep everyone relatively healthy, then we’ve got a legit shot. Along those lines, I’ll be keeping an eye on Avery Bradley – the progress that he makes on rehabbing that shoulder, and then what kind of role he’ll find for himself when he finally does return. That, of course, leads us to Courtney Lee. We landed a good player in his prime and paid big money to do so – we’ll soon find out if Lee is worth the investment, and if so, the questions will turn to Bradley’s future with the team.
I’ll be keeping an eye on Avery Bradley – the progress that he makes on rehabbing that shoulder, and then what kind of role he’ll find for himself when he finally does return.
I’m especially anxious to see Jeff Green in action. There is so much static out there about his passive demeanor on the court. Green himself has heard the harping, and he also acknowledges that he needs to be more assertive, more aggressive. Question is, will he do something about it?
I know our Celtics are going to fly under the radar - LA has Howard and Nash, Miami landed Allen – and that’s completely fine by me. Let the glamor teams have their day in the sun. Leave the Celtics to themselves, national media. Trust me, if all of the storylines break our way, our Celtics could very well be the sleeper team in this year’s championship hunt.
