Poor Ray Allen – pissed because he’s been dissed. Sugar Ray isn’t anywhere to be found when it comes to Kevin Garnett’s phone five. And now Ray Allen has gone “Ray-hanna” on KG, calling him out for being a rude boy and for being disappointed that our Big Ticket made those mean comments in the press towards him. It just gets better from there. Now we have Dwyane Wade coming to Allen’s rescue, defending his new best bud and trying to talk smack on Allen’s behalf.
What is this? An episode of Mob Wives?
Look, here’s the deal – Allen signing with Miami amounts to an act of betrayal. KG lobbied long and hard to keep Allen in a Celtics uniform, and loyalty means more to KG than the average fan realizes. Just look at how long Garnett toiled in Minnesota, often exiting in the first round of the playoffs, him the best player on otherwise dreadful teams.
Allen is really just deflecting. Taking the opportunity to place the blame on someone else for his departure. Get that weak shit out of here, Sugar Ray. You’ve got to do better than that. KG is going to retire a Boston Celtic, and he will be revered for generations to come. You? You’ll be our Benedict Arnold, and a journeyman at that. Milwaukee. Seattle. Boston. Miami.
I know how you’re going to look at it – you’ll just say, privately at least, that you upgraded every step of the way. In your mind there’s nothing better than being a Miami Heat. It’s a middle finger in the face of Danny Ainge, isn’t it?
Forget the fact that you could have demanded a no-trade clause. That all of this was bigger than Ainge trying to trade you. This was supposed to be about a special bond between the New Big Three. That’s how KG saw it. That’s how you did not.
That’s all well and good. But the fact that you pressed KG’s buttons by defecting shouldn’t come as a surprise. You knew how he would react. He worked his backside off trying to get you to stay in Boston. To consider your legacy. But you went ahead and did it anyway – you flushed five years of great memories and honorable pursuit of championship glory. And you became KG’s enemy in the process.
And I’m with KG on this. You can go Rihanna on him if you want – call him a rude boy, because that’s exactly what he is in this case.
But at least Garnett’s not a traitor.
