DJ’s know how to keep the crowd happy. Whether they play the most popular party tracks or mix in an exclusive joint that you’ve never heard. The best DJs know how to blend the two and give the crowd fresh cuts they never expected.
This season, Doc Rivers will be playing his own version of DJ hero, as he toys with a Celtics lineup that will allow him more flexibility than ever before.
Since last season, Doc showed a desire to inject the starting lineup with more speed. He made the surprise move of benching Ray Allen in favor of Avery Bradley, and shuffled Kevin Garnett to the center position to bring up Brandon Bass. That gave Rondo three solid jump-shooters to dish to, and a nifty slasher to find on backdoor cuts.
The only constants in this year’s starting lineup appear to be Kevin Garnett, Paul Pierce, and Rajon Rondo. The other two spots are up for grabs, and what Doc does with them may come down to matchups. For speed, Doc could bring in Courtney Lee and Jeff Green. Going big? Darko can team with KG in the frontcourt. Need a scoring boost? Jason Terry becomes the two-guard. The possibilities only increase once Avery Bradley and Chris Wilcox return from injury, they were both solid contributors to last season’s turnaround.
With newcomer Sullinger’s strong post game, Rivers has floated the concept of starting the rookie at power forward. The Ohio State product could provide the easy buckets that have eluded the C’s in recent years.
With all of this talent, half of the fun this season will be monitoring how Doc blends the classics (Garnett, Pierce, and Terry) with the latest hits (Rondo, Green, Bradley, etc.). It is up to the DJ to give the party what it needs, and Doc seems primed to spin any record that sounds like victory.
