The Celtics face the Timberwolves twice this season, and hopefully the second-time that these two teams match-up, it will be headlined by the positional battles of Rajon Rondo going head-to-head with Ricky Rubio, and Kevin Garnett squaring off against the new face of the franchise in Minnesota, Kevin Love.
Unfortunately, Rubio is still recovering and will be in street clothes for tonight’s contest.
This leaves Garnett v. Love as the match-up that most fans will keep their eyes on.
There are two major keys for Boston in this game.
The first is rebounding. The Timberwolves are the fourth best rebounding team in the league, averaging 45.4 rebounds per game. Keep in mind that this team has been without Love for most of this young season.
The Celtics have got to be active on the glass, making a conscious effort to box out.
The second key is for Boston’s bench to outscore Minnesota’s. The Timberwolves are a deep team, featuring athletic scorers off of the bench.
With Rondo back from suspension, Courtney Lee will return to the bench. This works out favorably for the Celtics, as Lee will be asked to help contain one of Minnesota’s greatest weapons off the bench, Alexey Shved, who is averaging 10.8 points per game.
