Okay, the time has come to pull the plug on what I fondly refer to as ‘The KG Experiment’. The Big Ticket isn’t a center. Even in today’s NBA where true big men are hard to find and almost every team has a power forward playing the five spot. KG is too old to give what it takes. He would be far better served back in his familiar four spot, with a legit center at his side. Someone who can intimidate, challenge shots, and yes, rebound the basketball.
None of that is possible at the moment. Our Celtics beat the hapless Cavaliers tonight, but the game exposed serious flaws that continue to undermine the team. And while getting Avery Bradley back is going to help on a number of fronts, it’s not going to solve the predicament the Celtics currently find themselves in.
That’s only going to happen if and when Danny Ainge pulls the trigger on a trade and brings in a big man.
Don’t get me wrong – I love KG. I love his heart, his passion, his unselfish attitude. How many superstars are willing to subjugate their talent and ego for the good of the team, even if that means playing a position that said superstar isn’t programmed to play?
My concern is that KG came back for one last run, only to find that time has indeed run out on his window of opportunity.
So let’s bite the bullet, Danny. Make a trade. Reconfigure this team on the fly. Doc is good enough to adjust.
Just do whatever it takes to get KG some help, before it’s too late.
