In keeping with the Spirit of Christmas, Danny Ainge has delivered a shiny new package under the tree of Celtics fans everywhere. When you remove the bow, ribbon and wrapping paper you’ll find an athletic,24-year-old who goes 6′-9″ and who can block shots and get up and down the court in a hurry. His name is Jarvis Varnado. He comes to us via the Sioux Falls Skyforce, where he has averaged 14 points, 10 rebounds and 3.9 blocks in 10 games this season.
Varnado was drafted in the second round (41st overall) of the 2010 draft by the Miami Heat. He spent time in Israel and Italy before landing in the D-League this winter. He played his college basketball at Mississippi State, where he became the NCAA’s record-holder for career blocked shots.
For the Celtics, the signing of Varnado could prove to be an inspiration. The Celtics need more than depth on the frontline, they need someone who can come in and play meaningful minutes. Varnado appears to be NBA ready, much like Greg Stiemsma was a year ago at this time.
So, welcome to the Celtic Nation Family, Mr. Varnado. You’re a great Christmas present, even better than an iPad (and that’s saying something). We hope that you and your family have a wonderful holiday season, and we can’t wait to see you in a Celtics uniform!
