After a pair of completely opposite performances from the Celtics, they once again seem to be in desperate search of an answer. Whatever that intangible is, they have yet to grab a strong hold of it or show any signs of fighting through the consistency of inconsistency that continues to be their achilles heal. The men in Green have found themselves over a third of the way through a no longer ‘young’ season in the middle of the Eastern Conference standings with no where to go but up…or down.
Some green bleeders are in full on Panic mode, frantically trying to justify a trade that would better the team for both long or short term. Others are putting everything on the almighty Avery Bradley’s return, and some are just waiting to say “Hey, I told you so…” Whatever the consensus may be among the passionate mass of fans, the next game always feels way too important for a team where even the bright spots seem a little dark.
The Celtics currently stand at 22nd in offensive efficiency and around the same rank on the defensive end as well. The ball movement is either completely there or entirely non-existent, and the same sort of inconsistency haunts us on the defensive end but seems to sting more or just look worse. The fact that opposing teams are no longer afraid to run right through our guards and into the teeth of the Celtic’s fragile interior defense is unnerving, worrisome, and downright maddening. The C’s defensive prowess 9 nights out of 10 is average at best, or by NBA standards, slightly below average.
Was it really all that long ago that we all had such high expectations for these Celtics? Remember when all we talked about was beating the Heat? KG and Pierce’s last run at a banner? Jeff Green emerging into an All-Star calliber player? Rajon Rondo finally grabbing a ‘much deserved’ MVP award? Instead we find ourselves at .500 with a bag full of questions, waiting to say “I told you so…”
