We all know Celtic Nation fans are the most loyal and passionate supporters in America, but perhaps it’s about time for a name change – to Celtics Inter-Nations? You see, whilst our boys resistance has weakened on the court recently, half the world away from the Garden there are an army of fans who bleed green just as deeply.
I for one have been a long-time NBA fan who always had a strong interest in the Celtics, but it became steadfast and amplified when I met my now wife, 10 years ago in her State of MA. I fell in love with her and everything Boston, especially when I felt the intense rivalry with neighboring NYC. It’s exactly the same down here between my Melbourne and that other city people may know, Sydney.
A.F stands for Atrial Fibrillation in the medical world, an arrhythmia of the heart. In describing our Celtics, it’s our exciting rookie duo, Avery Bradley and Fab Melo. The former has had one of the most wildly anticipated comebacks among the ‘Nations fans while all the time Fab is beating down the door for a full-time NBA contract in the D-League. It is this imminent stimulus that should evoke a sense of calm amongst fans, while we focus on how we tweak the No.5 position.
I say tweak because I don’t believe it should involve garnering our bright future for one big superstar. DeMarcus Cousins’ name keeps being brought up as a possible signing to be Boston’s one quick fix. Not for mine. For me, telling Cousins “we need you” is the last thing you should tell a guy with proven ego problems in lowly Sacramento. Sure that attitude could be changed, but it is only a matter of could and not will! Such a trade would also require names such as Bradley and Melo being mentioned in negotiations. Hell no! I want the Celtics to be better in 5 years than they are now. By which time we’ll be talking Banner 19, right?!
Our best option I feel is to take a look at younger healthy Centers who can come-of-age being fathered by our Legends, KG and Pierce. At what value? Well how about Lee, Bass and Green? And as a very last resort, Joseph? Lee in particular has struggled to hold a starters role in the 30 games this season. We didn’t sign him for 4 years @ $21M to struggle immediately and has only served to enhance all the hype over Avery’s return.
In the end, we must all remember the one thing that is the envy of all other supporters in the NBA. It’s our close Family – and from within, our season should be kick-started.

Ollie,
Thanks for the update viewpoint from half way around the world, my own observations are a bit fuzzy from my vantage point just 1500 miles away. It is remarkable how the Green Passion spreads around the world and draws our lives and interest into a merged excitement.
As for your “rookie duo”–well Bradley is entering his third campaign (albeit without benefit of a single summer of Celtics’ play), and Melo has a full NBA-contract. Fab is probably not even banging at the door as I suspect that he fully recognizes the benefit of playing 25 minutes in NBADL games vs. riding the pine with few practice days on our struggling parent club. Get back to me at the end of February when I hope his progress positions him to actually contribute in the C’s front court which sorely needs some reinforcements. As for rookies, I actually think that Sullinger deserves more of Bass’s time as he struggles with his shot (hopefully a short-term issue) and team defense (a problem about which I am much less optimistic).
At any rate, welcome to the discussion and I hope to see your critique in/of the “In Three Months” post that I am working on.
