This has been a very popular topic lately and Jeff Green has been making a case in his favor as to why he should take Brandon Bass’ starting spot. We know the Celtics lack size down low, especially after trading away Jason Collins last week, but Green has been producing a lot more off the bench than Bass has as a starter. We know Bass is the bigger player (weight-wise), but Green is far more consistent and he can take over a game if he needs to.
Green is the more versatile player out of the two. I say this because Green is not a one-dimensional player. He can drive (and finish at the rim as we have seen many times this season), he has a very consistent jumpshot, has great length which definitely helps on the defensive end and is a smart decision maker. Bass, on the other hand, is not so consistent. He misses far too many open jumpers, gets outrebounded night in and night out, and gets flat out manhandled in the paint by the opponent most of the time.
The Celtics are now down to just 4 big men (KG, Bass, Fab Melo and Chris Wilcox) after trading Collins and Barbosa’s expiring contract for G Jordan Crawford. With that being said, it would make sense for Bass to stay in the line-up, but the Celtics gave Phoenix a 25 point beating lead by Jeff Green and his 31 points. I know Bass was in the starting line-up in that game as well, but numbers don’t lie. Green had 31 pts on 9/14 FG, 7 rebs, 4 ast and 5 blocks, while Bass had 6 pts on 3/8 FG, 6 rebs and 0 ast and 0 blocks. So you can see where I am going with this. Numbers don’t lie and they’re certainly in Green’s favor.
As far as season averages go, Green is averaging 10.0ppg and 3.4rpg. Bass is averaging 7.7ppg and 5.0rpg. So you see Bass averages more rebounds, but Green is easily the better scoring option and as I said earlier, the more consistent player. Whatever the Celtics do, they need to it quick because the playoffs are getting closer after each game. The Celtics are now 30-27 and are looking to pick up a few big men in hopes of helping their rebounding woes before this season ends.
