Big test tonight. Dallas is tough. They can rebound and are the best foul shooting team in the league. Watch Humphery on the boards with their 2nd unit.

Their gutty performance last night was unexpected. Coming in off of the Rocket game against a team that has been cruising along winning 14 of 15 could have been a recipe for a bad showing. Instead they played hard and with spirit and led much of the game until falling behind early in the fourth. That could have been implosion time, but instead they battled back and won going away. I didn't think they had that left in them, though before too much arse slappin', we have another tough opponent tomorrow night and it will be interesting to see if they can come out and play with good intensity for a full 48 minutes. Last night was a pleasant surprise, but it is also evident that Pierce is feeling much better now. He still has lost half a step, but he's starting to find other ways to score which is what you have to do to stay competitive. Garnett can't move nearly as quickly as he once did, and he too is in the process of adjusting, though the results are yet to be determined.

They played very well last night. The "D" was very good. They moved their feet. PP looked better, but he is taking a lot of shots to score. He took 17 shots and 5 more that he was fouled on for his 29 Pts.. Perk -- RAy Rondo were much more efficient shooting. Ray took 13 shots to score 21 Pts..
We won the rebound battle, but both teams were very sloppy. They had 35 T/O's between them. Neither team is doing well, the Celts had 17 T/O's, and Mavs had 18 T/O's. The only one on our 2nd unit who did anthing was BB. He had 7 Ptsl & 4 Rebounds. The other guys totaled only 6 Pts..
On to the Jazz.

Captain,
I have a little math correction for you. 29 points on 17 shots=1.71 pts./shot attempt. 21 points on 13 shots=1.62 pts./shot attempt.
I'm not trying to take away from any of the guys who had good games here, but to say that Ray Allen's 21 points were "much more efficient" than Paul Pierce's 29 is clearly false.

The quirks of the NBA. You take a shot, make the basket, and get fouled it counts as a shot attempt. Then you get a foul sot to make a 3 Pt. play.
You take 5 shots -- miss them all and get fouled on them all, and it doesn't count as a shot. You get 10 foul shots make them all, and the points count to make you Pts. per sot look a heck of a lot better.
Example: Glen Davis takes 6 shots in the game. He make 2 baskets and has 4 blocked. He is charged with taking 6 shots. Blocked shots count as FGA.
Wilt Chamberlin and Adrin Dantley made 28 Foul Shots in an NBA game. If they made 28 out of 32 foul shots. They score 28 Pts. without wver taking a shot in the game. Missed shots while being fouled do not count as Field Goal Attempts.
Perk shoots -- Goal Tending is called on the other team. Perk get 2 Pts. and is not charged with a Field Goal Attempt.
So PP may only show 17 Attempts, and could have jacked up 17 more shots and been fouled on all of them. Think that his 34 attempts would change the whole game?
The laugh is that the rule on shots that you are fouled on says that you shot was impeeded, so it shouldn't count against the shooter. Doesn't a block impeed you chance to score? Yet, you are charged with a Field Goal Attempt.

Paul Pierce scored 29 points on 21.4 possessions, for a PP/FGA number of 1.36 (TS% .680). Clearly a hideously inefficient shooting night. Ray was better at 1.46 PP/FGA, but has a natural advantage on nights when Pierce has it going (namely that the opposing defense needs to focus on Pierce which gives Ray more space to work with).

Captain,
When you get your shot blocked, you get nothing. It is what it is listed as, a missed shot. When you get fouled shooting a shot, you get two shots from the line and a foul assessed to the opposing player. Getting your shot blocked is not a positive basketball play, getting fouled taking a shot is, especially when you are shooting free throws at a high percentage, a la Paul Pierce.
Also, you're wrong about the goaltending thing. If you get your shot goal tended, it goes in the books as 1 made field goal and 1 attempted field goal, which is clearly what it is.

A field goal attempt (FGA) is not charged to the shooter if the shot is nullified because of illegal interference with the ball (goal tending) by an offensive player.
eBA Statistic Register: Unforced TO against the player committing the violation.
- A field goal made (FGM) is credited to a player any time a FGA by him results in a goal being scored or being awarded because of illegal interference with the ball (goal tending) by a defensive player.
eBA Statistic Register: FGM for the scorer without statistic register of the goaltending.
The illegal interference with the ball is registered only in the play-by-play game's relate.
A block gets you the shaft (counted against you). Missed FGA's that you are fouled doesn't count agaomst you. Doesn't matter if you make or miss the foul shots..
YOu can score any number of points without being charged with a Field Goal Attempt.
So you could get a Triple/Double with (0) FGA -- 10 Rebs. -- 10 Assist or 10 blocks.
