Benching Baby
Rivers angrily replaced Glen Davis with Brian Scalabrine in the third quarter after the former committed a triple fault - a turnover, followed by a foul, followed by a technical foul. Davis didn’t play another minute.
“You don’t get a tech in that situation,” said Rivers. “When you’re up 18 points and your team’s struggling, you’re not (Kevin) Garnett or one of those guys. You don’t get the liberty, anyway, to talk to the officials.“
And he wasn’t playing well, anyway, at that point. He was playing like the score, and I just told him he’s not at that point in his life where he can turn it on and off. We need him to be an every possession player, and I didn’t think he was that tonight.”
Boston Herald -- March 27, 2010
Right thing to do Doc. He deserved to be benched. He acted like a JERK!
Let me see if I have got this straight? It is a BAD thing to get a Technical when you are ahead by 18 Pts.? It is a BAD thing to get a Technical when your team is struggling? So is it a good thing to get a Technical when your team is behind? When you are Losing? When you are even?
BAD thing when you are not good enough to get T's or talk to the Refs? Is there a rating system that allows you to do these things?
"Woeful" Wallace and Perkins rank # 2 & 3 in the league in Technical Fouls. That's right between Dwight Howard # 1 -- Kobie Bryant # 4 on the list. So Wallace and Perk are good enough to get more Technicals than Kobie, D. Wade, Camelo Anthony?
Question Doc? Has Perk ever been benched because of a Technical Foul in his career? If not, why not? Wallace is the worst in league history. Is his skill level good enough for his mouth?
What is that BB's 2nd or 3rd T or the year? Nail him Doc. Cure him of this bad habit.
Now if you only had the guts to bench Perk or Wallace when they screw it up.

Yes there is a rating system in sports and in life, though you won't find it published anywhere. Simply, Baby is a reserve forward with a track record of effing up. What he did was stupid, and combined with the circumstances of the game and that he wasn't playing good, he got to sample the coach's ire. You are correct that Wallace and Perk who are habitual offenders, are given mulligans for their digressions. One is your starting center, and the other is your veteran free agent gem who the coach could hardly plead he didn't know that he had a penchant for collecting technicals.
This whole thing is nothing more than confirmation of what everyone already knows: Life Ain't Fair. Though there may be rules in place to cover most situations, the beauty is in how they are applied. Steve Howe couldn't seem to keep the white stuff out of his nose, but was given something like 8 "second chances". Why? because he was was a gifted lefty, and everyone knows that a good left hander is hard to come by, so why let a few bad judgements concerning cocaine get in the way of winning ball games?
Arenas thought it was a good idea to bring his gun collection to the Wizards' arena in the District of Columbia which has very strict anti-gun laws. Not to worry though when you're a rich celeb with his rather unlimited deep pockets it has just afforded him the kind of American justice that is reserved for special Americans, the rich and famous. Instead of a jail term of anywhere from 3 months to two years, he was given 30 days in a halfway house, a nominal fine of $5000, and some community service. Guess they really sent a message to him and everyone else not to break the laws in DC! All that is certain in this is that if I had brought a gun into DC, I'd been locked up for a year or more, and have a guy named Butch telling me that he thinks I am hot.
We really shouldn't expect it to be fair, I mean what fun would it be if you were rich and you couldn't get special consideration? Do poor people run for office and become lawmakers? Do poor people become lawyers and judges? C'est La Vie.

just told him he’s not at that point in his life where he can turn it on and off. i hate when any pro athlete turns in on and off, if you need to turn it off sit and let a bench guy give 100%

The Double Standard is Bull. If the 1st time, and everytime, that Perk started this tough guy crap and mouthing-off, he was put on the bench, it would never have come to this. He was allowed to act like a JERK, and now it is acceptable??????
Did you ever see a call changed by the player mouthing off?

ref dont change calls but if the right players (IE super stars) talk to the refs it gets there attention the next time down the floor

Usually Davis gets the lip-service while others go to the dog house (see Leon Powe/Shelden Williams), so I think he's been extended a large amount of liberty this season.
Frankly, I think Rivers' is fed up with Davis' act this season and holds him more accountable than other players, and rightfully so.
Who was upset he didnt get an offer from another team to start and had to come back to the Celtics? Davis.
Who was complaining about his role coming into the season? Davis.
Who got into an altercation with a friend and cost himself half the season? Davis.
Who got into an altercation with a fan this season? Davis. (Rivers response in January "Glen Davis has to grow up.")
"But Glen’s still learning, too. It’s an emotional game. Kevin’s tech was bad, too. With a minute and a half left in the fourth quarter, that was a bad one as well." -Rivers

I love how every one comes down on davis so much, last year he stepped up big for us when we needed him, now he is back to his bench role and fans like to pick on him like he is the reason the celtics struggle. As a back up PF glen is fine, his weight is what it is, he just so happens to be a basketball player in a football players body big baby is 6'8 between 290-330 lbs and people like to carry on about how fat he is, Richard Seymour is 6'6 310 and he is looked at as a good athlete. For his role on the team BBD is carrying his weight, KG is not and rasheed is not.

I have no problems with Davis' weight and commend Ainge for the weight clause, which is a motivating factor. Davis has been rebounding well of late, but that probably came from the threat of Williams taking his minutes.
I don't think Davis is being given a double standard in comparison to Perk/KG/Sheed, in fact he's been given a LOT of leniency.
Lets not forget the fan altercation was in the Palace of Malice, so Stern-O probably was lost it on that one.

I thought he just cussed out a foul mouthed Pistons fan? As we do that here every day I didn't think it that big a deal. :D

Strange, that when Perk is a JERK -- It's O'Kay! He didn't get to Double Digit Technical Fouls all at once. He has had a big mouth, and crybaby attitude for years.
Was he Ever disciplined??? I seem to remember a well mannered kid until he decided to play tough guy, and question every call. He is ridiculous. He isn't good enough to pull those stupid Tecnicals.
Davis got benched. Good move ! All these jerks should be benched when you can't control yourself. RAsheed is a proven ass. The worst in league history.
Perk is put on the bench all the time. The guy rarely plays more than 30 minutes.

I'm not the one trying to create a Davis vs Perk or Davis vs Sheed scenario, each player is treated on an individual basis. Different people react to different methods. Davis has been given plenty of minutes and leniency from Doc the past few years, if he acts like a jerk he should be benched.
Ask the same questions about Davis. At least the kid finally realized he needed to rebound, maybe he can start finishing around the hoop!

TCF: Still no answer on Perk? Has he been benched for trying to lead the league in Technicals? That is my question. It isn't Davis against Perk. It is Doc's handling of an on-going problem. All T's hurt th eTEAM. So STOP letting any of them get T's for mouthing off.
Bench them all. Davis -- Perk -- Rasheed.
Apparently you didn't watch the first few years of Perk's career where Doc would bench him for every little mistake and foul. He still does. Perk's never averaged 30mpg. As a young starter, he averaged 20-22mpg.
Doc has been horrible with young players, especially bigs. People hate on that 06-07 team, but there was a ton of talent there that Doc just wrecked.

Today's Boston Globe -- Gary Wasburn
A-B-Cs of Ts
Rasheed Wallace picked up his 14th technical foul of the season in a tantrum during which he yelled at two officials and his own coach. But Rivers said he didn’t plan on disciplining Wallace. The player was upset at a perceived double standard for LeBron James, who seemed to show up an official but didn’t get a T. “We know who Rasheed is, and at times he’s an emotional player,’’ Rivers said. [/B ]“But the one thing I will say is once he does the explosion — you noticed sitting on the bench — I honestly thought if I needed him I could’ve put him back in. He gathers himself pretty well. [B]He’s just like all of us; when we do something emotionally, five minutes later, 10 minutes later, you think, ‘Wow, I wish I could get that back.’ But you can’t.’’ . . .
Doc you sound like a Moron! YOU have the guy who is the "worst" role model for your younger players, and you excuse his antics. In any other job in the world, Rasheed would have be fired years ago.
Maybe he can get a job as a Bomb Disposal Exspert? YOu know a job where you must remain COOL at all times. Or BOOM!!!
10 minutes later, you could put him back together, if you could find the pieces. OOPS!
He's the worst role model for younger players, but the C's don't really have any younger players anymore.
Perk's been the way he is since early in his career. Doc wouldn't let him just play through mistakes (Doc would take him out after every mistake), so he started getting pissed after he made a mistake or got whistled because he might be taken out of the game. Now it's become a habit.

Well, despite sticking up for him later, Doc did pull 'Sheed after that silly outburst just like he did with Baby a couple of games ago.
If Wallace could put half the exuberance, energy and passion he puts into yelling at refs into boxing out and helping on D, he'd be pretty darned good.

LeBron had 0 fouls last night and didnt get a Tech for standing in the C's huddle, I think Sheed had a point even if his method of pointing it out was STUPID.

Yep! TKhe kids coming next year and the year after are Lucky. They can learn how Rasheed got the pictures of Danny and Doc making love to a Giraffe.
That's the only way he has a job. Or maybe he is Civil Service or a Congressman?
