Paul Pierce has shot 32% from the field overall, 22% from beyond the arc, has almost as many assists as turnovers, and is getting in lots of foul trouble trying to guard Lebron James in this series. I, like every other Celtic fan out there, really want to see him get his offense going before this matchup ends.

That said, The Truth has made some very positive contributions so far, particularly on the defensive end of the floor. He, along with the Allen family, has done an adequate job man-to-man against Lebron James. I remember one excellent defensive possession down the stretch of game four where Paul stopped the King from getting to the cup, getting a little help from Perk along the way. I forget the exact time and score, but I know it was a big stop at a crucial time. There have been many other times where Paul has moved his feet well isolated against His Excellence forcing James to pass the ball to teammates instead of trying the drive, spurring most observers to comment that there must be something wrong with the elbow or the head of Lebron. It certainly can't be that the Celtics are cutting off his path to the rim.

The captain's best defensive effort of the series, however, came in the third quarter of game 2 while older brother, Ray, was given the task of staying in front of the best player in the league. During the decisive stretch where we opened up the lead from around 15 to an insurmountable 23 points, Paul Pierce made four defensive stops in a row while playing as an off-the-ball help defender. On successive plays he blocked Anthony Parker's shot going down the lane, then did the same for Clown Boy, then trapped Lebron James brilliantly to force a turnover, and, finally, got in front of Delonte trying to get to the rim, leaving Redz to bobble the ball out of bounds. Interestingly, for all these plays, Paul got exactly 1 box score credit. I looked at his stat line for that game and he's only credited with one blocked shot for game 2.

His defensive contributions in game 2 put him in the running for MVP of the contest as far as I'm concerned.

So, while I would love to see Paul Pierce break out of his offensive slump starting tonight, more importantly for me, I want to see him and everyone else stay strong on the defensive end regardless of how it's going offensively for any individual player. And, I want to point out that the defensive contributions don't go unnoticed by everyone.

P.S. (and in the same vein) how about 'Sheed as an MVP candidate for game 4.

Go Cs!

I'm not quite as optimistic, but I saw an interesting article a couple days ago and it pointed out that in the 08 playoffs vs cleveland pierces scoring in games 1-4 was not very good. Don't remember the link. We need pierce and garnett to play at a highlevel to advance over the #1 seed.

Id say he got going.

He still didn't shoot all that great, but I thought he played great otherwise.

Would you like to comment on PP's "D" when Lebron got 20 Pts. in the 1st period? Or is that not part of the myth?

Give him all the credit for the good things he does. Last game, game 5, he scored, rebounded, got assists, and hustled. He still shot poorly. All FACTS!

Then tell the Truth about what he didn't do. In our 2 losses of the series with the Cavs, PP shot 9 -- 32 = 28%. He shot 2 -- 11 -- "3"'s = 18%. He had a total od 6 rebounds, and handled the ball poorly. He showed no "hustle', and looked out of it. All FACTS.

What has surprised me is the lack of hustle, and the poor excuses for his problems. Sounds like the baseball pitcher who walks 7 guys, gives up 9 RUNS, and says I am satisfied with my pitch location and velocity. OOPS!

I hope PP still has it. I hope he hustles tonight like he did last game. Hope he doesn't dribble himself and the TEAM into a hole.

I agree that he's played poorly offensively in a majority of the games this series, but I don't agree about the lack of hustle from Mr. Pierce. I think that for the most part in this series, (with the exception of that woeful game 2) our team has played with tremendous hustle and and a renewed sense of "Ubuntu."

It seems to me that the other guys are the ones making all the excuses, most notably their superduperuberstar.

I am hoping for another inspired, team effort tonight. Despite the wheels seemingly starting to come off a little bit, the Cavs are still a very dangerous team.

Go Cs!!

Yes, LeBron is getting criticism in Cleveland very much like what Pierce is getting here, except that LeBron is the superstar and arguably playing even worse than Pierce. And not arguably (IMHO), his team needs him even more than the Celtics need Pierce.

I agree that Ubuntu is starting to show up again (Cs just eliminated Cleveland), and the world is now seeing exactly how a healthy Celtic team is capable of playing. Dare I say it - the team play kind of reminds me of 2 years ago. Ray Allen and Pierce both had relatively poor games in game 6, but the Cs still managed to win, with great defense and a total team effort. Who'd have thought!
