You gotta love Kendrick Perkins, who is redefining for all future Celtics bigs the concept of doing the thankless dirty work. He vaporized Jermaine O'Neal, he neutralized Shaq and now all he's being asked to do is guard the league's best center (however limited his offensive repertoire), who is merely the strongest man in the league.

Now if someone would politely ask him to save his six fouls for defense. Just stop setting those high picks; that's all. Stop it. If there's even a 25 percent chance the referees will call it an offensive foul, just stop doing it. Trouble is, with Perk it's more like an 80 percent chance, so just stop doing it. His first two fouls on Sunday were offensive fouls setting high picks. The team can't afford him having one-third of his allotted fouls being on offense, when he's got to play Dwight Howard.
Bob Ryan in todays Boston Globe.

It isn't just the fouls, but they are T/O's. We lose the ball. Then Perk has to play differently because of the cheap fouls, when he gets back in the game.

Come of Perk play SMART. Can't help the Magic with 5 T/O's. Great "D", now SMART "O".

I agree that he should stop setting his offensive picks incorrectly and getting called for fouls on them. However, I don't think I agree with Ryan that he should just stop setting them. The Celtics offense is often driven by setting picks, so I guess Ryan is saying they shouldn't run those plays that require Perk to set picks? I just think he should do it better.

Don't think Ryan is saying to not set picks. He is saying to set them Right! To stop moving, and not trying to cheat by throwing out the hip.

Bad habit that he has not corrected. Now is the time.

I can see Doc screaming at Perk from the sidelines, "Why the heck aren't you setting any picks?!!!"

And Perk responding, "Bob Ryan told me not to."

If he didn't set those picks, they'd have better offensive rebound numbers... But, ya, how many of those picks does he set per game? How many points do those picks produce? I think those two numbers are pretty high.

Hopefully Doc will leave after this season and someone with an offensive brain will come in and put together a system that doesn't give them a 0% chance to grab an offensive rebound.

If he doesn't pick up even one of those fouls, he's able to play the 4th quarter and they probably win by ~30.

nepg,

That's a confusing post. I don't know if you're being sarcastic or not, but there's no correllation between setting picks and not getting offensive rebounds. The primary reason our team doesn't pick up alot of offensive boards is because the Celtics consider it more important for the bigs to get back on defense than get inside and battle for rebounds after missed shots.

The problem is not setting picks. It is doing it Right! It is also not bitching about every whistle and making the refs look bad. They will remember Perk crying about some foul where he broke the guys back. You know the one that never happened, according to Perk.

Bitching all season doesn't get you calls in the play-offs.

Perk lasted 15 minutes in the game, before he fouled out.

Game 2 marked the fourth time Kendrick Perkins had fouled out of a playoff game (first this season). The Celtics are 1-3 when Perkins fouls out of a playoff game.

Play SMART!

Perk has a rep for being a bad screener, and a lot of the calls are more because of his rep than the actual play.
